from a Quora:
What happened to the French troops that surrendered at
Dien Bein Phu?

Gérard Briais, College degree in Politics answers,
All prisoners (including the "light" wounded, according to
Vietminh criteria) will have to walk 700 km through jungles
and mountains to reach the camps, located on the border with
China, beyond the reach of the expeditionary force.

According to Erwan Bergot, of the 11,721 able-bodied or wounded
French soldiers captured by Vietminh when Dien Bien Phu camp fell,
3,290 were released and 8,431 died in captivity. According to
Historica magazine, of 10,998 prisoners, 7,708 died in captivity
or disappeared.
